  • Who does it help?
I work primarily with children aged between 4 and 12 but it can be used with older and younger children. Sometimes, even adults may benefit from it. It can really be an interesting insight into yourself.
  • How does it help?
As adults we primarily use talking as a therapy, others may find solace in other therapeutic practices such as, journalling, yoga, meditation, creating art and more. Children are not dissimilar, although their primary form of expression is through their play. It helps them to work through and show their emotions without having to find the words, and sometimes they may not even have the words. The play therapist is there to reflect back what might be said, notice and wonder about what they're seeing. Rather than interpreting what is being said, the therapist is curious with the child and helps them to work through their feelings without asking potentially difficult and direct questions.
  • What types of issues is it used for?
Play Therapy is used to help with all types of issues such as: low self-esteem, anxiety, trauma, bereavement and more including those with emotional and behavioural issues.
  • What is used in the play room?
The client will have a choice from activities and items such as: painting, drawing, clay, playdough, dolls house, sand play, books, puppets, musical instruments and much more.
  • How many sessions are needed?
Play Therapy is offered in blocks of 12 sessions, and maybe increased depending on the needs of the child. Each session is between 30 – 45 minutes depending on the age, development or specific needs of the child.
  • Is it confidential?
Absolutely. The children are told that whatever they say in the room is not told to anyone else – as would happen in an adult’s therapy session. However, unless there is a safeguarding disclosure then the correct procedures will be followed.
  • Do you comply with GDPR?
I do. My ICO number is - ZB299410
  • What if I want to know what my child has talked about/done in therapy?
That will be up to your child. I will not tell you anything they say (unless there is a safeguarding concern or they give me permission). I can give a rough overview of how they engaged but that will be all. Think of seeing a therapist as an adult, no one would ask your therapist what was said or spoken about.
  • Do you write reports?
I do for an additional fee.
